Def Jam Recordings’ artist The Roots have debuted their first single When the People Cheer off the upcoming album And Then You Shoot Your Cousin, set to be released May 13th. Speaking about the album back in February, Black Thought described it as “another concept album” in the vein ofundun, adding, “It’s not just about just one kind of character. We create quite a few different characters in this record. It’s satire, but in that satire it’s an analysis of some of the stereotypes perpetuated in not only the hip-hop community, but in the community.”
The lyrics and rhymes of Black Thought are pretty good on the new single too, and we can say that When the People Cheer is another in the group’s ongoing sonic experiments with the boundaries between jazz, classical, and hip-hop written with the long time collaborator Greg Porn.
