The rapper billy woods teams up with Kenny Segal, El-P, The Alchemist, and more for his latest project. Listen to the lead single "Misery" and check out the tracklist.
Backwoodz Studioz founder and underground rap icon billy woods has announced his new album, Golliwog, set for release on May 9. The first taste of the album comes in the form of the Kenny Segal-produced single "Misery", now available for streaming.
It looks like a concept rooted in the past, as the rapper shared on the album’s inspiration::
“When I was nine years old, I wrote a story about an evil golliwog. My mother read it and told me it was overly derivative and needed some work. Here we are.”
With Golliwog, woods continues his signature introspective and thought-provoking lyricism, blending raw storytelling with a diverse roster of producers and guest artists.
The album features an impressive lineup, with production from The Alchemist, El-P, Shabaka Hutchings, DJ Haram, Conductor Williams, Messiah Musik, and more. On the feature side, Golliwog boasts guest appearances from Elucid (his Armand Hammer collaborator), Despot, Cavalier, al.divino, Bruiser Wolf, and Yolanda Watson.
This release follows woods’ highly praised 2023 collaborations:
Both projects earned widespread acclaim, with Maps landing at No. 14 on Pitchfork’s "100 Best Albums of the 2020s So Far".
With its haunting production and woods’ signature lyricism, "Misery" sets the stage for what promises to be one of 2024’s most compelling underground rap releases. Listen to the single now, and mark your calendars for Golliwog’s release on May 9.
